Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: "Niegenbramborg" for Neubrandenburg: Platt signs are coming

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - Visitors to Neubrandenburg should also be greeted with the Low German name variant "Niegenbramborg" from Thursday (10 a.m.). For this purpose, the Stadtbauhof wants to install the first additional white signs on the posts with the yellow town entrance signs. The name "Niegenbramborg" was defined for the four-gate city of Neubrandenburg together with experts from the Universities of Greifswald and Rostock and the Heimatverband.

The municipality is the first of the eight largest cities in the northeast and wants to get 18 additional official signs, which will be financed by donations. With the Low German designations, the Low German language, which is characteristic of the region, should again become more visible to the public.

Among others, the well-known Low German poet Fritz Reuter (1810-1874) lived in Neubrandenburg. The city has around 65,000 inhabitants, only Rostock and Schwerin are larger in MV
