Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: No application from MV for future center in the east

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The planned new future center for German unity and European transformation is not coming to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There will be no application from the federal state. That became clear on Friday in the state parliament. The opposition reacted with disappointment to the state government's decision to support the application of the city of Brandenburg. The "Schweriner Volkszeitung" (Friday) reported about it first.

With the new institution, the federal government wants to honor the experiences of East Germans with change and upheaval. By 2028, the center is to be housed in a new or remodeled building in eastern Germany. On the one hand, research is to be carried out there on the upheavals after unification; on the other hand, the center should offer space for exhibitions that honor the achievements of the East Germans, as well as a room for encounters and events.

A commission chaired by the former Prime Minister of Brandenburg Matthias Platzeck (SPD) proposed the future center 2020. The traffic light parties SPD, Greens and FDP included the plan in their coalition agreement. The location decision is planned for the second half of the year.
