Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Organ kits: bring the variety of organs closer to children

Malchow/Rittermannshagen (dpa/mv) - Those who are interested in organs can now get closer to the "queens of instruments" with an organ kit for children. As the head of the organ museum in Malchow (Mecklenburg Lake District) Friedrich Drese said on Tuesday, the kit has about 120 wooden parts that can be assembled into a functioning organ. The parish of Gielow-Rittermanshagen obtained the "self-build organ" with funding and has already tried it out with children, it is also the first in the north church.

The kit is intended to give children and interested parties an easy way to understand the diversity of the organ landscape in the north-east, said Drese. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are around 1000 of these instruments from several centuries in churches and communities, such as in the concert church in Neubrandenburg.

"The kit comes with 50 whistles and a bellows that needs to be inflated by hand like the originals," said Drese. When the DIY organ is finished, it is about one meter high and sounds like a real instrument. The Malchow Organ Museum gives an overview of the spectrum of these instruments and the organ builders in Mecklenburg and in the Pomeranian part of the country. In 2021, almost 10,000 visitors came to the Malchow monastery church with the museum.
