Barth (dpa / mv) - The record attempt to sing as many stanzas as possible of the folk song "Herrn Pastor sien Kauh" at the Low German Singefest on Sunday in Barth (West Pomerania-Rügen) failed. As a spokesman for the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District said on Monday, a total of 499 different verses were intoned by the guests in the afternoon. Around 150 people who happily sang came to the singing festival at the Bible Center in Barth.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is still "well ahead of the game," said the spokesman. This is shown by a look at previous highs. People in Emsbüren, Lower Saxony, are said to have intoned 505 Low German stanzas of the song in 2007, the record is around 1000 stanzas, it was said.
The song, which today has the status of a "cult song", describes how the village pastor's cow suddenly dies and then pretty much all villagers receive shares for "sometimes quite exotic uses". The animal's eardrum and teeth are also amusingly attributed to important people from the village. The Low German Singing Festival was also the start of the Nordkirche's series of events "Time for you - spiritual summer in the north".
