Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: pensioners transfer fraudsters more than 17,000 euros

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The police in Neubrandenburg warn of a scam in which a pensioner from Western Pomerania lost more than 17,000 euros. As a police spokeswoman said on Friday, the 66-year-old from the island of Usedom fell for a caller who claimed to be "Dr. Richter from the consumer center". This woman explained to him that there were pending seizure notices against the brother of the 66-year-old man.

He wanted to avert the damage and transferred money to accounts several times over a long period of time after phone calls. The 66-year-old does indeed have a brother, but has not been able to verify that the claim is true. Little by little, around 17,400 euros were collected. When the calls didn't stop, the senior got suspicious and called the real consumer advice center on his own - and the scam was exposed. The police are still investigating the case.

In 2021, scammers in the Northeast had stolen a total of around three million euros with similar scams, including shock calls from fake police officers or lawyers, about a third more than in 2020. Experts predict that this sum could be even higher in 2022.
