Bergen (dpa / mv) - The police in Western Pomerania are investigating a suspect from the island of Rügen in connection with a series of diesel thefts. As a police spokesman said on Thursday, the 19-year-old has already confessed to several thefts. The young man was caught by the officers during an evening traffic check in Bergen (West Pomerania-Rügen) because suspected crime tools such as a pump, hoses and fuel cans were found in his car.

Since the sharp rise in fuel prices after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, diesel thefts have also increased sharply in Western Pomerania. Among other things, the young man confessed to several thefts from machines and systems in a gravel works near Garz in the south of the island. He and an accomplice were also filmed there.

In addition, during an interrogation, he has now admitted to having pumped and stolen diesel from trucks in Bergen on Rügen and in Sagard. The investigations were still ongoing.
