Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Property tax reform: only a few declarations received

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In the course of the property tax reform, only a few real estate and property owners in the north-east have submitted the required declaration to their tax office. There are currently around 105,000 declarations, which is almost twelve percent, the Schwerin Ministry of Finance announced on Thursday halfway through the submission deadline.

The Federal Constitutional Court declared the previously valid property tax in 2018 to be unconstitutional, and new valuation models were then developed - which is why all property owners must now submit a declaration of information about their property.

"I can certainly expect the current status of the declaration," Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD) was quoted as saying. "Experience has shown that the number of declarations submitted increases as the deadline for submission approaches." At this time many questions have been received. "This shows that many citizens are currently preparing to submit their declarations."

Well over 90 percent of the declarations received have so far arrived digitally. The last submission date for Germany is October 31, 2022. According to earlier information from the ministry, around 1.2 million properties have to be revalued as part of the property tax reform.
