Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Rally tour commemorates riots in Lichtenhagen in 1992

Rostock (dpa/mv) - About 50 participants in a rally in Rostock on Sunday commemorated the racist riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen 30 years ago. The commemoration of the pogrom is mostly very local political, since it takes place around the sunflower house, said the Pro Stay Right Initiative. The racism of the 90s is more comprehensive.

A rally tour by bus was planned, in which the participants also wanted to stop at the Schwerin Ministry of the Interior and the Nostorf-Horst initial reception center on Sunday. It is also about illuminating the institutional effects of that time.

From August 22 to 26, 1992, to the applause of thousands of onlookers, residents and neo-Nazis attacked the central reception center for asylum seekers and a dormitory for Vietnamese workers and partly set them on fire. The police could not get the situation under control. The riots are considered the worst racist attacks in German post-war history up to that point.

In the coming week, numerous events will commemorate the riots 30 years ago. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) is also expected in Rostock on Thursday (25 August). A demonstration is planned for August 27 in the Lichtenhagen district.
