Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Rostock mayor election: Greens and SPD for left candidate Kröger

Rostock (dpa/mv) - Eva-Maria Kröger (left) is supported by the SPD and the Greens for the upcoming runoff election in the race for the Rostock town hall. This emerges from communications from both district associations. The defeated Greens candidate Claudia Müller praised Kröger as a competent local politician. "After 800 years of city history, it's time for a woman to lead the administration," she was quoted as saying in a statement on Wednesday.

The SPD district association had previously announced its support. This is also carried by the SPD candidate Carmen Botezatu, who, like Müller, did not make it into the runoff in the first ballot on Sunday. According to a statement by the SPD district association, various goals have been agreed that Kröger wants to support in the event of an election victory. This includes the remunicipalisation of school meals and cleaning services, the new construction of a combined indoor ice rink and swimming pool in the IGA Park or the construction of a municipal sewage sludge incineration plant.

The Rostock CDU and FDP criticized this project - both parties support Kröger's non-party opponent Michael Ebert. The left has rightly taken a critical position on the construction of a power plant in Bramow, it said in a statement on Wednesday. Now the SPD is demanding Kröger's blessing for what the CDU and FDP regard as uneconomical. The runoff will take place on November 27th.
