Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Rostock University Hospital calls for caution due to the heat

Rostock (dpa/mv) - The university clinic in Rostock has called on people to avoid direct sunlight because of the expected heat wave. "What many people don't know is that you're completely unprotected in the water because it doesn't reflect the sun's rays. It's therefore mandatory to apply sunscreen after every swim," said Steffen Emmert, Director of the Clinic for Dermatology and Venereology, on Monday in Rostock. Even in the water you can get a sunburn after five to ten minutes.

The clinic described small children, old people and patients with previous illnesses such as high blood pressure or cardiac arrhythmias as particularly at risk. "Sunburn, headaches and sunstroke from too much direct sunlight are the greatest dangers," says Jan-Arne Lauffs, head of the central emergency room at the University Emergency Center (UNZ).

The clinic called on people to take precautionary measures to prevent life-threatening situations: do sports in the morning or in the evening, drink lots of unsweetened drinks, don't leave children and pets in the car.
