Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Sassnitz mayors re-elect: three candidates

Sassnitz (dpa / mv) - In the northernmost city of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - in Sassnitz (West Pomerania-Rügen) - almost 8400 residents are called for the mayoral election this Sunday. As city returning officer Gabriele Thiele said on Thursday, there are three non-party candidates. The previous mayor Frank Kracht, who is supported by the left, wants to start a second term. The head of the city's economic development agency, Leon Kräusche, and the engine driver Carsten Schmidt compete against Kracht. The head of administration is elected for seven years.

If none of the candidates get more than 50 percent of the votes in the first ballot, there will be a runoff on September 25th. In the city council of Sassnitz, the Citizens for Sassnitz initiative has the most votes with six deputies, the left and an alliance of SPD and an initiative each have four seats. The CDU has three seats, the AfD two seats and there is one non-party MP.

Sassnitz is one of the tourist and economic centers on the Baltic Sea island because of the Mukran ferry port and the nearby chalk cliffs of Rügen.
