Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Schwerin and Granitz Castles will follow in 2019

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - After the two Corona years 2020 and 2021, Schwerin Castle has again proved to be the biggest visitor magnet among the castles in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this year. By the deadline of December 11, 175,000 guests had already been counted, as the director of the State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections MV, Pirkow Zinnow, announced on Wednesday. "By the end of the year, we expect numbers here to be almost as high as in the record year 2019." At that time, 194,557 visitors were counted.

The State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections MV include the facilities in Schwerin, Güstrow, Bothmer, Ludwigslust, Mirow, Hohenzieritz and Granitz on Rügen, as well as the State Museum Schwerin, which has been closed since October 2021 for renovations. The most beautiful works from the State Museum have been on display in the palace since July under the title "Glanzstücke im Dialog". The show has attracted around 54,000 visitors so far.

“The Granitz hunting lodge was also able to continue the successful number of visitors before the pandemic,” said Zinnow. If one takes into account the corona-related closure of the observation tower until April, the number of 115,752 visitors until December 11 (year 2019: 123,464) can be considered particularly satisfactory.

According to the information, the number of visitors to the Mirow and Hohenzieritz castles is comparable to that of 2018. "Bothmer Castle and Ludwiglust Castle are more severely and lastingly affected by the general development of the crisis," reported Zinnow. "The number of visitors here is not yet back to the pre-corona level." Before the pandemic, both locations would have had two mainstays - bus tourism and events. Both have not yet fully recovered and have suffered from high price increases. In Ludwigslust there are also restrictions due to construction work.
