Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Schwesig: Aid program worth billions in the energy crisis

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has announced a relief package to deal with the energy price crisis in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the amount of 1.1 billion euros. 600 million came from the recently decided federal aid packages, 500 million euros are contributed by the state itself. "We will not let the citizens of our country down," said Schwesig on Wednesday in the state parliament in Schwerin.

The hardship fund should be increased from 30 million to 100 million euros. In addition to energy-intensive companies and municipal utilities, schools, universities, social and cultural institutions could also benefit from this. The conversion of the ports and infrastructure to the future energy supply and the development of hydrogen technology are to be supported with 800 million euros. The country does not want to incur new debts, stressed Schwesig. Most of the additional spending should be covered by the expected budget surpluses.
