Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Several avian influenza outbreaks after the poultry exhibition

Schwerin/Demmin (dpa/mv) - After the end of a poultry exhibition in Demmin, there were several outbreaks of avian influenza in small farms. "I am very concerned about animal husbandry in the country and breed diversity," said Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) on Friday in Schwerin. He appealed to all 241 participants to take hygiene measures.

According to the ministry, two outbreaks have been confirmed in the Mecklenburg Lake District district, one outbreak and two suspected cases in the Rostock district, one outbreak in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and another in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district.

"Such a situation has never existed in our country before," said the minister. No animal should leave the stocks, none should be bought. In the event of any abnormalities, the owners concerned should contact the veterinary office immediately. The alarm chain is set, all authorities are involved. According to Backhaus, the neighboring countries have also been informed: "What needs to be done will be done to prevent a wildfire."
