Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Social organizations see supply at risk

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In a letter to the state government, the large social organizations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania warned of the collapse of social institutions in view of the high inflation. The price increases, especially for energy, can no longer be compensated for by the providers of social services, according to the letter to Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) and several specialist ministers, which was published on Tuesday. The league of leading associations of free welfare asked for political support.

The problem is that the service providers - for example day care centers - contractually agree a year in advance with the public sector what they have to do for a certain fee. Now, however, there are unprecedented cost increases that could not have been foreseen a year ago. "Since March 2022, the associations of service providers have been contacting the Ministry of Social Affairs and Education, the municipal associations and cost bearers to work out joint solutions for financing the unforeseeable costs - so far without success," the associations complain.

For example, renegotiations with subsequent refinancing of the increased costs are conceivable. Short-term flat-rate support would also help, write the associations. Provision is also made for a possible serious lack of energy in winter. "Possible measures are the introduction of self-sufficient power and heat supply or the simple equipment with sleeping bags, heating blankets, etc..." For this, the sponsors needed a budget from the state and municipalities.
