Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: State government plans state energy summit for August 22nd

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is convening a state energy summit for August 22nd. As Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) announced on Friday in Schwerin, the meeting with representatives of municipalities, business, trade unions and energy companies will discuss how to guarantee a secure energy supply.

"We are working to ensure that we will continue to have sufficient energy available in the future," said Schwesig. This includes the feeding of liquefied gas via two terminals, the construction of which is planned for Lubmin. Thanks to the construction of the Nord Stream 1 Baltic Sea pipeline, the Greifswalder Bodden site is already well connected to the onshore distribution network.

In addition to short-term measures to secure the energy supply for households and industry, the summit also deals with the increased expansion of renewable energies. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to pick up speed again. Due to the lack of advance planning and growing resistance from parts of the population, hardly any new wind turbines had recently been built in the north-east. The expansion of solar power generation also came to a standstill. According to Schwesig, the energy supply will also be the dominant topic at the next cabinet meeting this Tuesday, to which the President of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, will be connected.

Schwesig renewed her demands on the federal government to expand the help for consumers in view of further rising energy prices. "There must be further relief," said the head of government. In addition, the energy money that has already been decided must also be effective for pensioners.

The CDU parliamentary group in the Schwerin state parliament had accused the state government of inaction against the background of the energy crisis. She requested a special meeting of the Economic Committee for August 4th. The purpose of the special committee meeting was to encourage the state government to do more, it said. The red-red government replied that there was no need for such suggestions.
