The red-red state government is planning a 365-euro annual ticket for public transport throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for pensioners. But for many seniors, that doesn't go down as well as hoped.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Many seniors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are critical of the 365-euro annual ticket planned by the state government. For trainees, for whom the cheap annual pass already exists, it certainly makes sense because they are on the way to the company or to the vocational school all week and can use it, said the chairman of the state senior citizens' advisory board, Bernd Rosenheinrich, the German press agency. For seniors, especially in rural areas, who occasionally go to the hairdresser or doctor in the next town, the 365-euro ticket does not offer any progress.

The red-red state government wants to enable seniors, the second population group after trainees, to use local transport throughout the state with the 365-euro ticket for almost one euro a day. However, in order to take advantage of the advantages compared to a single ticket or the planned 49-euro Germany ticket, annual ticket holders would have to travel frequently.

This is not to be expected with seniors, said Rosenheinrich. He wouldn't buy the 365-euro ticket himself either, because he takes the tram maybe once a week and it's not worth it. "We should think about selling it as a monthly or weekly ticket," suggested Rosenheinrich.
