Greifswald (dpa / mv) - The Green politician Stefan Fassbinder remains mayor of Greifswald. The 55-year-old won the runoff against Madeleine Tolani (CDU) on Sunday. According to the city administration on the Internet, he received 56.04 percent of the votes, Tolani came to 43.96 percent. Fassbinder's lead is around 2,000 votes.

Voter turnout was 35.38 percent, lower than in the first ballot two weeks ago. At that time, 40.9 percent of the 47,000 eligible voters cast their votes.

Fassbinder has been mayor of the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald since 2015. At that time he had won by only 15 votes and ousted the CDU from the top of the town hall after 25 years. The 41-year-old Tolani is a law professor in Wismar and has been a member of the Greifswald citizenship since 2019.
