Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Stralsund's prefab housing district is becoming greener

Stralsund (dpa/mv) - The Knieper West prefabricated building district in Stralsund is to become greener thanks to federal funding worth millions. The budget committee of the Bundestag has provided more than 4.5 million euros for the conversion of the Heinrich-Heine-Ring, said Stralsund's mayor Alexander Badrow (CDU) on Wednesday. The backbone of Stralsund's largest district should be transformed from a traffic lane into a green boulevard.

Crossings, park-like facilities and a connection to the city forest are planned. The city will add 800,000 euros. More projects are planned in the area in the future. We are talking about solar thermal energy for district heating, surface unsealing for water storage or a children's hospice, school campus and community center. Badrow thanked the members of the Bundestag Hagen Reinhold (FDP) and Anna Kassautzki (SPD) for their commitment to the funding.

According to information from Reinhold's representative's office, the funding comes from the "Adaptation of urban areas to climate change" program. Overall, the federal government will fund 164 projects nationwide this year with a total of 173 million euros.

Kassautzki said: "I am particularly pleased that after many urban improvements in Stralsund's city center, Knieper West is now also being upgraded."
