Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Strasburg decide on the future of the mayor

Strasburg (dpa/mv) - In the small town of Strasburg (Vorpommern-Greifswald), the citizens will decide on the future of Mayor Heike Hammermeister-Friese (CDU) this Sunday (8 a.m.). The city representatives had set the date for the referendum in September. According to a majority, "trust in the actions and the work of the mayor has been permanently disturbed." The mayor, who has been in office since 2018, has so far refused to resign.

The 43-year-old Hammermeister-Friese was directly elected for seven years in 2018. At that time, she prevailed in a runoff against an SPD candidate. A two-thirds majority is required in MV to vote out a directly elected mayor. This majority must also make up one third of those entitled to vote. In Strasburg, around 3,800 people are called to the referendum.
