Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Study: Molli could operate between Rerik and Warnemünde

The Baederbahn Molli, the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast between Kuehlungsborn and Bad Doberan, is an important tourist attraction. An extension of the route and the customer base is possible.

Güstrow/Kuhlungsborn (dpa/mv) - According to a study, the route network of the Molli baths railway could be significantly expanded. So far, the historic train, which is mostly used by tourists, has been running between Kuehlungsborn and Bad Doberan. The Technical University of Dresden came to the conclusion in an expert opinion that the number of passengers could be doubled if the route to Rerik in the west or to Warnemünde in the east was expanded, said a spokeswoman for the district on Thursday. Even if some landscape and nature reserves are affected, the two new sections are considered feasible. First, other media had reported.

In this way, other customer groups such as commuters and schoolchildren could be reached. Modern vehicles should run on the new routes - supplemented with steam trains. To do this, a steam train and seven to eight modern multiple units would have to be purchased. The TU Dresden assumed a project volume of around 110 million euros. According to the Molli managing director Michael Misslitz, all affected communities in the region are behind the project. The aim is to be able to submit concrete plans to the state government by 2025.
