Ribnitz-Damgarten (dpa/mv) - Two construction workers experienced a nasty surprise on Friday in Ribnitz-Damgarten (West Pomerania-Rügen). The men's transporter suddenly rolled off on sloping terrain and landed in Ribnitz Lake, as a police spokesman said. The vehicle sank until only the windows were sticking out. "The construction workers were powerless," said the spokesman. The 33 and 45-year-old men had parked the vehicle on a bike path in the port, presumably to work there.
Helpers managed to use a crane to salvage the transporter by noon. The exact amount of damage has not yet been determined, it said. The cause is also still unclear. The Ribnitzer See is part of the Saaler Bodden, on which the city is located with the Mecklenburg part of Ribnitz and the West Pomeranian district of Damgarten. A jetty is currently being built in the port of Ribnitz.
