Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Taxpayers' Association criticizes the amusement park project near Pütnitz

Ribnitz-Dammgarten (dpa/mv) - The taxpayers' association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sees the funding for the planned amusement park near Pütnitz (Vorpommern-Rügen district) as a waste. "We cannot understand why more than 43 million euros in taxpayers' money flow here without the major investor sharing the development costs," said Deputy State Chairwoman Diana Behr on Thursday in Schwerin.

On the initiative of the amusement park operator Center Parcs, several partners want to build a 650-hectare facility with thousands of beds on the Pütnitz peninsula under the name "Amber City". In addition to Center Parcs, the organizer of the Pangea Festival, Supreme GmbH, is also involved in the project, which costs around 45.5 million euros.

From the point of view of the taxpayers' association, the project is no longer up to date, there is a risk that existing, established tourist offers will be cannibalized. "There can hardly be any talk of promoting inland tourism in this region, as the Ministry of Economics emphasizes," it said.

In the past, however, it was not only the economic concept behind the amusement park that caused criticism: the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park is on the doorstep of the planned park. According to the project partners, the amusement park should commit to sustainability and preserve the habitat of animals and plants. The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) had already criticized the extensive construction work required in the area in 2020.
