Sassnitz (dpa / mv) - An attentive postwoman prevented a holiday home fire on the island of Rügen on Friday. The police said in the evening that they had reported heavy smoke in a house in the Zirkow district of Schmacht. When the fire brigade and police arrived, it turned out that the 45-year-old owner of the holiday home had lit a fire in the fireplace. He closed the hearth with a glass door and set firewood out to dry on the mantelpiece in front of the glass pane. He then went to his adjoining house and fell asleep there.
It was said that the heat from the chimney caused the firewood to be dried to produce massive amounts of smoke. The smoke spread throughout the apartment. "It was only because of the timely emergency call from the postwoman that the fire did not break out," it said. Nobody got hurt.
