Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: the start of the corn harvest: the police warn of a higher risk of accidents

Ludwigslust (dpa/mv) - With the start of the maize harvest, the risk of accidents involving wildlife in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has again increased significantly. The police in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district drew attention to this on Wednesday. Since Monday, 18 wildlife accidents have been registered in the district between Plau and Boizenburg, which is rich in wildlife. An 18-year-old motorcyclist collided with a badger near Grabow on Monday, fell and was injured.

Wild boar and roe deer, in particular, increasingly sought out new areas in view of the disturbance of their maize territories by agricultural machinery, especially at dusk and in deer crossing zones.

In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, the proportion of wildlife accidents is also generally very high: in 2021, almost every second accident involved collisions with wild boar, foxes, badgers, deer, deer or wolves. In a total of 3248 wildlife accidents, which accounted for 44 percent of all accidents, one person was killed in 2021 and 44 people were injured.
