Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The state government plans to abolish the bed tax

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer wants to take away the possibility of a bed tax from municipalities. "I clearly reject a bed tax, because this tax ends up in the general municipal budgets," said the SPD politician on Friday. The "Ostsee-Zeitung" had reported.

Meyer criticizes that the municipal tax for tourist guests is often not earmarked and therefore does not benefit tourism. In his own words, he wants to prevent cities and municipalities from using the money to plug budget gaps. According to the information, a bed tax is levied in Wismar and Schwerin. It is planned in Greifswald and Stralsund.

Instead, the minister wants to introduce guest and company-related taxes as part of the planned tourism law, which should be earmarked.
