Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: time capsules of St. Nikolai Church opened

Wismar (dpa / mv) - As part of the renovation work on the St. Nikolai Church in Wismar, the time capsules in the tower crown have revealed their secret. These were hidden in the copper, formerly gold-plated balls on the top of the tower and contained, among other things, a document with information about the last renovation of the church tower after the Second World War, as the Hanseatic city announced in Wismar on Wednesday.

The document, dated September 12, 1966, praises the efforts of those responsible in the former GDR for the preservation of the building, which was the only church to have escaped the bombing of April 14/15, 1945.

The document and all the remaining contents of the time capsule were handed over to the city archives of Wismar. According to the city, the document is the second youngest document kept there, only the document for the inclusion of the old town in the UNESCO World Heritage List is younger. After completion of the renovation work on the church tower, which has been ongoing since February, the outer facade and roof of which will be renewed, the time capsule is to be refilled.
