Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Trainee program should open up opportunities for civil engineers

Wismar/Schwerin/Rostock (dpa/mv) - Instead of an internship, students in civil engineering at the University of Wismar can, if they wish, go through a comprehensive trainee program from the coming semester. This extends the standard period of study from seven to nine semesters. "We want to pick up the young specialists early on and show that there are not only great projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but also attractive employers," said René Firgt, Director of the State Office for Road Construction and Transport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, on Monday in Rostock. According to the information, the authority developed the new program together with the university, construction companies and engineering offices.

According to the plans, those who opt for the trainee program instead of the regular study plan should gain experience in a road construction authority, a company and an engineering office within 20 months from the seventh semester. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the students receive a monthly allowance of 1,300 euros gross during this time. The regular curriculum only includes a 14-week internship.

So that this long practical phase can be included in the alternative curriculum, Bodo Wiegand-Hoffmeister, Rector of the University of Wismar, and Ines Jesse, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, signed a cooperation agreement at the start of the week in Schwerin. Jesse sees the offer as an important contribution to securing skilled workers. From the point of view of the university, the trainee program improves study conditions and offers career opportunities.
