Sternberg/Schönberg/Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - Two people died in accidents near Sternberg (Ludwigslust-Parchim) and in Neubrandenburg at the weekend. In addition, at least four people were injured in other traffic accidents and their cars were badly damaged, police spokesmen said on Sunday in Rostock and Neubrandenburg.

A 65-year-old driver died after his car left the federal highway 192 near Sternberg on Sunday and crashed into a tree. It is still unclear why the driver left the road between Dabel and Borkow. The man was initially able to be revived at the scene of the accident, but died shortly afterwards in an accident clinic.

A 65-year-old pedestrian died in a clinic in Neubrandenburg on Sunday from serious accidental injuries. She was overlooked by a driver in Oststadt on Friday, hit her and suffered life-threatening head injuries. The 75-year-old driver said he was blinded by the low sun. He is now being investigated on suspicion of negligent homicide.

An accident on the Autobahn 20 on Sunday near Schönberg (Northwest Mecklenburg) caused longer disabilities. Because a 52-year-old driver switched to the fast lane, a 54-year-old driver driving there had to brake his car hard and skidded. The 54-year-old overturned his car and broke through the outer crash barrier. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries. The A20 was closed for more than an hour in the direction of Lübeck, resulting in a two-kilometer traffic jam.

In Ribnitz-Damgarten and in Rostock, two novice drivers had an accident with their cars on Sunday morning. In Ribnitz-Damgarten, a drunk 20-year-old - he was later measured to be 1.12 per mille breath alcohol - drove his car into a wall, injuring him and his passenger. In Rostock, a 20-year-old drove the car on the B105 against a street lamp and was hospitalized with injuries. Both cars suffered extensive damage.
