Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: union hopes for more say in Volkswerft

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - After a meeting of the "temporary Volkswerft Committee", IG Metall hopes to have more influence on the development of the former MV shipyard site in Stralsund. As soon as the concepts for use and fire protection have been fully worked out, they want to sit down with the city administration again, said Guido Fröschke from IG Metall in Stralsund on Thursday.

The city emphasized that they are always available for talks. "Our doors have always been open, and of course they continue to be open," it said. The city of Stralsund wants to develop a maritime commercial area on the shipyard site. In order to avoid running costs for the tenants, a fire protection concept with aisles is to be used instead of the previous works fire brigade. The union takes a critical view of this, and the same applies, among other things, to the sale of machines that are still available.

Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) criticized the communication between the city and the state government at an IG Metall rally in front of the Schwerin state parliament on Wednesday: "We are in the situation that we have to chase after all the information, it can't go on like this." According to Meyer, the state government wants to help to enable former employees of MV shipyards - who are currently still being absorbed in a transfer company - to be employed at the location. It doesn't look like that at the moment.
