Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Universities have to save 17 million euros: solution found

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The universities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will have to save a good 17 million euros next year as a result of the state parliament's savings targets for the state government. A good solution has now been found and presented to the rectors, said University Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) on Wednesday.

According to this, the universities should release their so-called mandatory reserves for emergencies of around nine million euros. These reserves are not planned for projects - if they are released, this does not affect scientific operations. The universities should not have to replenish this savings stock immediately in the next few years.

According to the minister, another five million euros are in so-called management bases. They could also be used to achieve the universities' savings target. This money is also not earmarked for scientific operations.

The universities would have to make the remaining savings during ongoing operations, Martin continued. But they have until the end of 2023 to do that. "The solution now available gives the universities the necessary planning security and ensures that the global underspending does not lead to cuts in the structures of research and teaching," she emphasized.
