Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Universities start the semester - universities will follow in October

Wismar/Stralsund/Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The fall semester 2022/23 started at the universities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Monday. In Neubrandenburg, the new students were officially matriculated, in Wismar and Stralsund this will take place on Tuesday.

The slight decline in first-year students observed across Germany is also evident in Wismar, said a university spokeswoman for the German Press Agency. More than 1150 students would be newly enrolled, which corresponds to a decrease of four percent compared to the previous year. The total number of students is currently 7,320, with the enrollment and re-registration phase of distance and foreign guest students not yet being completed.

According to a spokesman, 487 young people began their studies at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences on Monday - also slightly fewer than in the previous year, as he said. Almost two thirds (63 percent) come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A total of around 2,200 students are enrolled at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences.

Stralsund University wants to announce its numbers on Tuesday. At the universities, the new semester does not start until October.
