Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Career starters with a technical college degree or successful vocational training have significantly better chances of permanent employment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania than academics. As reported by the Statistical Office in Schwerin on Tuesday, 11.8 percent of university graduates in the northeast initially have to be content with fixed-term employment contracts. In the other two groups, the rate was only about half as high.
However, the biggest handicap when looking for a permanent job is still the lack of a professional qualification. According to the statistical office, 24.1 percent - and thus almost a quarter of this group of people - were only employed on a temporary basis in 2020. The information is based on the results of the 2020 microcensus.
According to this, 684,300 people were employed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. About 80,000 of them had fixed-term employment contracts. The proportion was 11.7 percent across all sectors and age groups. This also includes the approximately 21,600 training contracts nationwide, which are generally limited in time.
However, young workers are more often employed on a fixed-term basis even after completing their apprenticeship or studies. According to the statistics office, the proportion is 16.5 percent. Among the over 35-year-olds, only 5.7 percent of dependent employees have fixed-term employment contracts. According to the statisticians, the probability of being in temporary employment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was more closely linked to educational qualifications than in Germany as a whole.
