Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Volkstheater reminds of the first fun party in the east

Rostock (dpa/mv) - The Volkstheater Rostock wants to make up for premieres in the new season from September that have fallen victim to the corona pandemic in the past two years. With a two-year delay, for example, the musical classic "Cabaret" will be staged, the Volkstheater announced on Monday.

The cross-divisional major project "Merlin oder das wuste Land", which was announced for the end of the season, is now scheduled to premiere on October 15th. The piece by Tankred Dorst, which tells of the magician Merlin, is accompanied by music by the English baroque composer Henry Purcell. Merlin is supposed to seduce people to evil, but he defies his father's order.

At the beginning of September, the season should start with an extraordinary project. From the 2nd to the 11th of the month, the Volkstheater commemorates the first fun party in East Germany, according to director Ralph Reichel, the German Beer Drinkers Union, founded in 1990. Then it becomes classic in the schedule: Schiller's "Don Karlos" has been announced for September 10 as the first premiere of the new season in the big house. Another classic is to be released on December 10 with Lessing's "Miss Sara Sampson". The Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock celebrates its 125th anniversary with ten symphony concerts.

The theater wants to go outside to its visitors, as director Reichel announced. The project "Songs from Captivity" serves this purpose, among other things. The former Stasi prison in Rostock, where almost 5,000 men and women were imprisoned for political reasons between 1960 and 1989, becomes a stage for folk theater artists who perform songs and texts on the subject of imprisonment. Premiere is on March 17, 2023.

The Volkstheater invites you to the Christmas carols on December 22nd in the Ostseestadion. Around 10,000 people came to the premiere in 2019. In the two following years, the event was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
