Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Western Pomerania-Greifswald again receives millions in aid

Greifswald (dpa / mv) - The Vorpommern-Greifswald district is receiving further millions in aid from the state to reduce debt. The district announced on Friday that this would be nine million euros for the 2021 budget year. The state has been supporting the district for many years in reducing old debts. After the district reform in 2011, he inherited an extremely difficult financial legacy, it said. Other municipalities in the north-east have also taken advantage of such aid.

The aim of the state government is to reduce the previous budget deficits of all municipalities in a maximum period of ten years. Municipalities received help if they themselves generate a surplus to pay off old debts. Vorpommern-Greifswald succeeded in doing this with a positive annual balance of current payments and receipts of more than three million euros. The district received a consolidation assignment for the third time in a row.

District Administrator Michael Sack (CDU) called the aid another step in the right financial direction. "It shows that the path we have taken is the right one, even if it involves difficulties for the district."
