Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: woman found dead: three and a half years in prison for husband

A dead woman is found after an explosion in a house in Priborn. She didn't die from the explosion. Her husband, who probably wanted to blow up the house, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - In connection with an explosion in a residential building in Priborn (Mecklenburg Lake District), the Neubrandenburg Regional Court sentenced the perpetrator to three and a half years in prison. The 66-year-old was found guilty of attempted murder on his wife on Tuesday. The convict had confessed to covering his wife with a cloth before the explosion in December 2021 and trying to suffocate her. When he thought she was dead, he lay down next to her and detonated a gas bottle.

The woman was also dead. In the process, however, it could not be clarified what the heart disease woman really died of in the attack, as judge Daniela Lieschke said. The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The explosion caused only minor damage to the house, the convict survived with serious injuries. The body of the 65-year-old woman was found in the marriage bed after the explosion and examined. Shortly thereafter, an arrest warrant was issued against the 66-year-old.

The fact that he committed the crime in a state of "significantly reduced criminal responsibility" speaks for the convict, the judge said. The man was in an exceptional mental situation. What makes matters worse is that he committed the act as a person of trust. The couple were married for 45 years.

A planned house sale was named as the motive. The convict had told an acquaintance on the phone about this before the crime and described the sale as a "mistake".

The trial also involved permanent admission of the accused to a psychiatric hospital. Therefore, the process was not public. However, the Chamber refrained from doing so.

Because the convict had already spent eight months in custody, the arrest warrant was lifted at the end of the verdict. The man was able to leave and should serve the remainder of his sentence once the verdict is final.
