Bützow (dpa / mv) - A woman from the Bützow region (Rostock district) has lost more than 40,000 euros to a love scammer. As a police spokesman said on Thursday in Güstrow, the woman had been in contact with a man on social media such as Facebook since November 2022, who posed as a member of the US Army deployed abroad. He wanted to move in with her after the mission, but was injured abroad.
He wanted to send her the compensation of around four million euros that he was entitled to beforehand. This requires deposits at customs, which the woman also transferred in installments. These have already added up to more than 44,000 euros. Finally, the 62-year-old called customs in Frankfurt am Main, where she was supposed to get the necessary documents, so that the scam was exposed.
The police warned that locals who are contacted via social media should not follow payment requests in emails or via social networks. The criminal police have initiated criminal proceedings against the false soldier on suspicion of fraud.
