Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: World Heritage application: Information after changes to the application

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - After significant changes to the Schwerin application for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the public should be informed comprehensively on Thursday (5:30 p.m.). Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD), the world heritage coordinator of the state capital, Linda Holung, and Secretary of State for Culture Susanne Bowen (SPD) will take part in the information event in the courtyard of the palace. Lectures are dedicated to the beginnings of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble in the 18th century and the chronological classification of the World Heritage application. A panel discussion is also planned. Admission is free.

The city of Schwerin changed central content in its application for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage in the last few meters. The idea of a "cultural landscape of romantic historicism", which had been pursued for years, was rejected, as the city announced in May. Instead, the focus is now placed on a mature residence ensemble with buildings from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

The application was supplemented by three buildings from the former purveyors to the court, Uhle, Wöhler and Krefft. According to the information, previous components such as the grinding mill, the Brandenstein Palais and the island of Hakenwerder in Lake Schwerin were deleted. They did not meet the UNESCO criteria, it said.

The application documents should be submitted in September for the preliminary examination. February 1, 2023 is then the deadline for submitting the application to UNESCO in Paris. The decision on the inclusion of the residency ensemble in the World Heritage List is expected in the summer of 2024. The Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Stralsund from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are on the Unesco list of world heritage sites.
