"I cannot begin without paying tribute to my dear mother-in-law, Her late Majesty, who is in our thoughts today and whom we all miss so much," Camilla is quoted as saying by the BBC. The 75-year-old continued: "Over the past few months, my husband and I have taken enormous comfort from the messages of condolences we have received and continue to receive from all parts of the world. They have reminded us that the written word is a unique... Has the ability to connect, heal, soothe and give hope even in the midst of grief."
Camilla delivered her speech to the winners of a writing contest. She herself is known for her love of reading and has taken on numerous patronages related to literature.
Camilla plays an important role in the monarchy alongside her husband. She is also to be crowned at the coronation ceremony for Charles, which is to take place on May 6 next year. The Queen decreed in February 2022 that Camilla should be called Queen Consort once Charles ascends the throne.
The Queen said in a statement at the time: "When my son Charles becomes king in due course, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you gave me." And further: "It is my sincere wish that when that time comes, Camilla will be called Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal ministry."
