Mystery series on Netflix: "1899" - puzzles, pyramids and a lot of hot air

The creators of the acclaimed German series "Dark" have released their new project. "1899" is darker, more cryptic and mysterious than its predecessor. But is it good or even better? Unfortunately, the answer is: No!

Black pyramids, black luxury liners, a black sea and many dark faces of various protagonists: The new mystery series "1899" - to be streamed on Netflix - wants to be enigmatic, sophisticated and particularly clever. But screenwriter Jantje Friese and director Baran bo Odar, the German creators of the internationally acclaimed series "Dark", don't tell anything new.

The narrative structure of "1899" feels like a mediocre repeat of "Dark" until the eight-episode season finale. Many questions, sparse answers and no really exciting story. Instead of time travel, this time it's about the perception of reality. This is neither innovative nor new and has been implemented better by many genre series and films.
