New team for appeal: Amber Heard is swapping her lawyers

In June, Amber Heard loses the case against her ex Johnny Depp and is ordered to pay damages. She doesn't want to let that sit on her and is appealing. She now relies on a new team of lawyers for this. Your previous main defender is no longer one of them.

Amber Heard is swapping parts of her legal team. As the US portal "TMZ" reports, the 36-year-old actress has hired the renowned law firm Ballard Spahr. The lawyers should take the lead in driving the appeals process against Johnny Depp. One of her previous counsels, Ben Rottenborn, will remain on board, but will be joined by his colleagues David L. Axelrod and Jay Ward Brown with immediate effect. The lawyer Elaine Bredehoft, who was her main defense attorney in court, is no longer there.

In a statement, Bredehoft said it was the perfect time to "pass the baton". She did her due diligence and made sure the new team was up to date. A statement from the new firm said, "We welcome the opportunity to represent Ms. Heard on this appeal as this is a case with important First Amendment implications for all of America." They are confident that the court will clear Heard's name.

In early June, the 59-year-old Depp won the defamation lawsuit against Heard after around six weeks of the trial. He sued her for $50 million for an article she published in the Washington Post in 2018. In it, she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. She did not mention her ex-husband by name. Depp said the post still ruined his career, damaged his reputation and cost him a lot of money. Heard then filed a $100 million counterclaim against her ex.

Amber Heard was sentenced to pay more than $10 million in damages. Johnny Depp has to pay her two million dollars. The remaining 8.35 million was capped at five million due to local laws. Amber Heard has appealed the verdict.
