North Belfast: A teenager was attacked in a hate crime against sectarians

A north Belfast youth slapped and kicked a teenage boy with a hate crime motivated by sectarian ideology.

At 17:30 BST on Sunday, the assault occurred at a Brougham Street fast food restaurant.

The two-year-old boy was surrounded by youths, who wanted to know where they came from and what their religion was.

One of the boys was taken by ambulance to be treated for injuries.

According to police, the attack was being considered a hate crime motivated by sectarian ideology.

Brian Kingston, DUP MLA, stated that it was a "deplorable hatred crime" committed by a "cowardly religious bunch".

He stated that the youths didn't know their victims, but were searching for smaller numbers of Protestant youths they could attack.
