Around 60 percent of the area is privately owned. The majority - around 80 percent - of these around 63,000 forest units are small forest areas of up to five hectares.

Around 118,000 hectares of forest are looked after by the forest administration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. 175,000 hectares of forest area is assigned to the corporations, such as special-purpose associations and municipalities. Only 17,000 hectares are federal forest.
