Cologne (dpa / lnw) - risk of traffic jams in North Rhine-Westphalia: The ADAC expects long queues on the motorways in NRW from Wednesday afternoon due to the long Ascension Day weekend. "There are practically no longer any corona restrictions for holiday traffic. If the high fuel prices and cost of living don't put a damper on the desire to travel, the level of traffic jams will approach the time before Corona," said ADAC traffic expert Roman Suthold.

Because of the meeting of commuters and short vacationers, the traffic jam on Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. could even be particularly pronounced, the ADAC warned. In 2019, the Wednesday before Ascension Day was one of the busiest days of the year with 1,335 reports of traffic jams in NRW.

The ADAC emphasized that the motorways in the greater Cologne area and in the Ruhr area are particularly at risk of congestion. Patience is particularly important on construction sites.

When the weather is nice, the traffic club also expects delays from day trippers on Ascension Day and Saturdays and Sundays on the arterial roads of the cities to the local recreation areas. On Sunday afternoon, the return traffic will ensure full motorways. The ADAC expects little traffic in NRW on Friday.

In the year before the corona pandemic, 2019, according to the ADAC, there were 2081 reports of traffic jams and slow traffic with a total length of 2481 kilometers in NRW from Wednesday to Sunday.
