North Rhine-Westphalia: Airport chaos: Laumann sees the employers to blame

Essen (dpa / lnw) - In view of the sometimes chaotic conditions at the airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, State Labor Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) has criticized the employers. From his point of view, these are "clearly" responsible for the situation, Laumann told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ, Thursday). "On the one hand, the staff could not be retained during the pandemic despite short-time work benefits and state support. On the other hand, the operators did not prepare early."

Laumann also criticized the fact that many vacancies were not even reported. "I am very surprised that employers have so far only given up a few jobs on the job exchange, for example in Düsseldorf only 13 jobs for baggage handlers and only one job for an aviation security assistant." He expects "that employers will ramp up their activities on the labor market as quickly as possible and try to recruit additional staff".

With a view to the possible use of foreign workers at the airports, Laumann said: "If employers submit applications for a priority check, these should be decided by the employment agencies well below the statutory deadline of two weeks."
