North Rhine-Westphalia: André Kuper remains President of the State Parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The CDU politician André Kuper remains President of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament. In its constitutive session, the state parliament re-elected the 61-year-old Rietberger as its head on Wednesday.

In a secret ballot, 178 MPs voted yes, 14 no, and three abstained. All 195 members of the state parliament took part in the election. The qualified administration specialist has held the highest official office in the country since 2017.

The CDU parliamentary group had proposed him again last week on the grounds that Kuper fights "passionately for a self-confident parliament and a strong democracy". In many difficult moments he found the right and clever words. The strongest parliamentary group has the right to propose the presidency.

The President of the Landtag is the highest representative of the Landtag. He protects the rights of Parliament, represents it externally, manages its business, chairs the plenary sessions and is the head of the state parliament administration. It is elected for the duration of the legislative period and is intended to act in a non-partisan manner.
