North Rhine-Westphalia: ATMs blown up: perpetrators fled

Two explosions in one night: ATM bombers were out and about in Zülpich and Neuss in the Rhineland. Initially, there were no arrests.

Neuss (dpa / lnw) - ATM bombers struck in Zülpich near Euskirchen and in Neuss near Düsseldorf on Monday night. In Neuss they blew up a vending machine at a consumer market, the police reported. After the detonation, they raced away in a high-horsepower getaway car, the police reported on Monday.

The black car was last seen at the Autobahn exit in Neuss-Reuschenberg. The Neuss number plates attached to the car were stolen from a parked car near the crime scene shortly before the blast.

The police secured evidence at the crime scene. At first she did not say anything about the possible prey and the manner of the detonation caused.

In Zülpich, two strangers also blew up an ATM on the same night. The detonation was so strong that window panes shattered, said a police spokesman. Local residents then saw the suspects flee in a car.

It is currently not clear whether they took loot, the police spokesman said. 14 tenants had to leave their apartments after the blast. In the meantime, however, a structural engineer has determined that the building is not at risk.

The extent of the damage was not known as of Monday morning. The investigation is ongoing, said the police spokesman.
