North Rhine-Westphalia: Baby shaken: Four and a half years in prison for father

Bonn (dpa / lnw) - The Bonn district court sentenced a 38-year-old father to four and a half years in prison on Monday for severely abusing an infant. In November 2021, the accused shook his three-month-old son so violently that his head swung back and forth uncontrollably. The parents only called an ambulance two days later because the child was convulsing. In a clinic, the life of the infant could still be saved.

The defendant, who initially remained silent about the allegations, confessed at the end of the trial. He put the child in a seesaw after changing his diaper around six in the morning and giving him the bottle. However, the infant did not like it and continued to whine. That bothered him and he wanted to stop it. As an "educational measure" he took the son and shook him several times until he was still.

The court described the behavior after the crime as particularly serious and "of low sentiment". The father sat next to him for two days and watched the boy getting worse and worse. When his mother repeatedly asked if something had happened, he said nothing. The court could not clarify the true motives for this behavior.

According to the doctors today, the child, who is now around one year old, can lead a normal life with minor restrictions. He lives with his mother in an assisted living facility.
