The state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Monday in Düsseldorf that 175,386 babies were born, 3.1 percent more than in 2020. On average, every woman gave birth to 1.60 children in her lifetime, compared to 1.55 the year before. Here, the statisticians referred to women aged 15 to 49 years. Ten years ago, the average birth rate was significantly lower (1.41 in both 2012 and 2013), after which it climbed to 1.62 in 2016 and then fell again. Now it's going uphill again.

According to the statistics, women with foreign nationality are having more children, their average birth rate last year was 2.13. German women had an average of 1.49. The difference between these two values ​​has decreased in recent years.
