North Rhine-Westphalia: Bonn's Beethoven monument is back on the pedestal

The famous Beethoven statue in Bonn was missing for half a year - the bronze sculpture was at the restorer. In mid-August, the celebration of the unveiling in 1845 will be recreated in period costume.

Bonn (dpa / lnw) - The Beethoven monument was in the workshop for half a year, now the monumental Ludwig is returning to its original place on Münsterplatz in Bonn. On Tuesday (7.00 a.m.) work will begin on the re-erection of the statue for the Bonn-born composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

The statue and pedestal are transported to the city center on a flatbed truck, where the composer's monument has stood for almost 177 years. The substructure is the first thing to be done, and at around 8.30 a.m. the 3.40 meter high Beethoven figure is to be placed on it.

A team of restorers had been removing damage to the bronze sculpture since January. The surface has been sealed with protective wax. After the much-photographed sight has been re-erected, the surroundings still have to be prepared. The lighting and the flower bed are still missing.

On August 14, the 177th anniversary of the first disclosure will be celebrated. At that time, citizens had collected for the monument. The composer and pianist Franz Liszt also donated a lot of money.
